By Terry R. Walsh
One thing you have to respect about Michigan skeeters: they are a tough bunch. Looking more like waterfowl hunters heading for the marshes, twenty-two shooters posted some excellent scores in spite of steady morning rains. Thomas Holton and Mark Murphy both posted 99s in the 12 gauge event. Murphy won the shoot-off and the 12 Gauge Championship. Class winners were Ed Howe (A1), Thomas Holton (B1), Jim Schultz (C1), and Christina Baning (D1).
The lunch break was a welcome one. Andrea Schymanski headed up the kitchen staff, and shooters enjoyed homemade scalloped potatoes and ham, hot chicken noodle soup, fresh baked cookies and muffins, and plenty of hot coffee. Seconds were definitely the rule.
The rain remained relentless for the afternoon 20 gauge shoot, and the wind built steadily, gusting up to 20 mph. Douglas Haines, Thomas Holton, Len Smith and Terry Walsh all posted 95s. Walsh outlasted the other three in the shoot-off and claimed the 20 Gauge Championship. Class winners were Douglas Haines (A1), Len Smith (B1), Justin Broecker (C1), Jim Schultz (D1), and Grant Murphy (E1).
Thomas Holton won the HOA Championship with a fine 194. Class winners were Terry Walsh (A1), Len Smith (B1), William Schymanski (C1), and Jim Schultz (D1).
The rain stopped just long enough for pictures and a “Hat Shoot” honoring promising young shooter Justin Broecker, who shot his first registered “50”. Congratulations Justin!
A special thanks to our lead sponsor, Joe Gun Sporting Goods in Sanford, and to Chuck’s Auto Body, also in Sanford, for their generous support. Thanks, too, to all the shooters and referees who braved the elements and made the shoot successful. As always, Building and Grounds Manager Kelly Vilet had the club in top shape for the event.
News5 Stand - New reduced rates! The cost for 25 birds in this 'mini sporting clays like' setting is now the same as a round of skeet or trap! Just $4.00 for members and $6.00 for guests. It is a great way to shoot on the cooler temperature days and even nights under the lights. Warm up with a fast and fun round of 5 stand.
